Blinking Lights and Other Revelations – Eels

Foi recentemente lançado, o último álbum da banda de Mark Oliver Everett, ou melhor de E.. Ao longo de mais de 90 minutos de música, os Eels voltam aos grandes momentos, produzindo um conjunto de 33 (!) temas de enorme profundidade. Depois do desapontante «Shootenanny», este trabalho duplo é um épico pop, onde a genialidade conturbada de E. fica mais uma vez sobejamente demonstrada. Será, muito provavelmente, a obra prima de Everett, ultrapassando mesmo o igualmente brilhante «Electro-Shock Blues».

Este, não é, no entanto um álbum tipicamente pop, entendido aqui como levezinho ou de fácil absorção. Pelo contrário, este é um trabalho cheio de pormenores, de particularidades ocultas ao primeiro contacto, que decorrem em grande parte do carácter experimentalista que este trabalho acaba por assumir.

E. conta desta vez com um conjunto de ilustres convidados, como Tom Waits, John B. Sebastian, ex-líder da mítica banda dos 60′ Lovin’ Spoonful, e Peter Buck, guitarrista dos R.E.M..

Este é um trabalho particularmente interessante e que assenta como uma luva na concepção deste blog, já que, apresenta tantas facetas que será um desafio, igualmente épico, tentar arrumá-lo numa só categoria. É, pois, um álbum extremamente ecléctico, onde E. se deu ao luxo de misturar a pop dos anos 80, com o folk, a soul, os blues, o gospel ou o reggae.

O resultado final é realmente brilhante. Traduzindo-se ainda numa enorme prova de sobrevivência, de alguém que encontrou o pai morto, assistiu à morte da mãe com cancro e ultrapassou o suicídio da irmã.

São 33 temas que merecem ser ouvidos com igual atenção, optando-se pois por não destacar uma ou outra faixa. Excertos de todos os temas podem ser ouvidos aqui.
